Valances can vary in height but rarely measure more than a foot and a half. When choosing fabric for your valance it is important to remember the scale, or size of the pattern. Look for prints that have a small enough repeat , so that you will be able to see the pattern. Be careful not to choose a pattern that is so small it gets lost or disappears when you look from a distance.
